Truth rarely shows up as a clean, perfect statement that lands the same for everyone. More often, it moves through imperfect vessels: stories, systems, metaphors, language, frameworks. These things aren't the truth itself, but they're how truth becomes shareable, usable, and real in someone's life.

That's why I keep coming back to Joseph Campbell. Campbell didn't reject myth, and he didn't treat it like childish fiction either. He treated myth like a map — not the territory, but not random. A map is a human-made tool that helps you navigate something bigger than you can easily describe. Myth, in his framing, is a navigation tool for meaning.

That idea sits underneath everything I build.

When I tell you about Doug and Anita — two sailors I watched from my balcony in St. Petersburg, one racing to beat last year's time, the other sailing to watch the sunset — that story isn't literally about sailing. And when I talk about running a pre-trip inspection before you build anything, that isn't literally about trucks. What these stories do is carry strategic content and emotional content at the same time. They hold nuance in a way a bullet-pointed business plan never could. They create a felt sense of the lesson, not just an intellectual one.

I use four kinds of language deliberately, and each one carries a specific kind of weight. Sailing carries philosophical depth and perspective — the long view, the why behind the work. Trucking carries personal authenticity, grit, and real-world discipline — because I drove that life, and the lessons are in my bones. Health carries urgency and stakes — what happens when you ignore what matters while chasing what doesn't. And building carries practical clarity: plans, structure, tools, step-by-step progress.

None of these are decorative. None of them are branding exercises. They're vessels. Maps, not territory. But they are not random either. Each one was chosen because it encodes a dimension of something real that I'm trying to help you see.

Here's why this matters for you — not just for me.

If you're building a business from twenty years of experience, you already have truths worth sharing. Hard-won insights about your industry, your craft, the way things actually work versus how people think they work. The challenge isn't having something valuable. The challenge is getting it out of your head and into a form that travels.

That's what your language does. When you develop your own vocabulary — your own metaphors, your own shorthand, your own way of naming what you see — you're not making up cute brand words. You're building maps that help your audience navigate territory they can't see yet. You're giving them handles for something real.

Language is how your truth travels. It's how an insight leaves your mind and becomes usable in someone else's life. The better the vessel, the further the truth can go without getting distorted or lost.

This is also why writing in your own voice matters so much. When you write to the person you serve, you're meeting them where they are. When you write as yourself — the founder, the builder, the person who has been through it — you're showing where you stand and what you see. These are two different vessels carrying different facets of the same insight. Neither is the complete truth on its own. But together, they let your reader triangulate. And once they can triangulate, they can start to move — on purpose — toward the territory your map is pointing to.

Campbell understood that myths weren't fairy tales. They were the best maps people had for navigating what they couldn't fully articulate. Your business deserves that same seriousness. Your language isn't decoration. It's infrastructure.
